Church Services

General Information

Church services in Shelly Beach, at St John’s Lutheran parish, are held regularly, every Sunday, from 08:30 until around 10:00.

The national suspension of all church services, taken in an effort to combat the current Corona virus, has been relaxed. Church services in Shelly Beach have, therefore been resumed, on condition that all the necessary health and safety protocols be carried out. For those that prefer to stay at home, God’s Word shall continue to be proclaimed, every Sunday, with the use of live-streaming on St John’s dedicated YouTube channel. If you do happen to miss the live service, please watch the recorded service, at your leisure, on the same link.

The following is a summary of the prescribed health protocols in accordance with the Covid-19 Health & Safety Plan which is carried out at the church. These include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Face masks, worn correctly within, the church and church hall
  • Hand sanitizing
  • A minimum of one-and-a-half to two meters physical separation
  • All material displayed on a screen. Hymnals may be used, but should be left at the pews for sanitizing
  • Holy communion served under sanitary conditions
  • A register is kept of all attendees

What to Expect

Saint John’s is a small, but friendly congregation. As a visitor to our church you can expect to be greeted warmly. During Covid-19, people will respectfully maintain the required physical distancing, with no hand shaking or other physical contact. The usual hymnal and booklet with the Order of Service is presently replaced with a video screen. Services generally follow a traditional format, thus seeking to maintain order and continuity. During these extraordinary times, you will be required to sanitize your hands and fill in a short register with details, as required by present Covid-19 regulations.

Order of Service

You will notice that the pastor wears a robe. Essentially, a robe is worn as one called by God to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. The core focus of each service is the sermon, which is a teaching of the proclamation and application of God’s word. Accordingly, the sermon is preceded and followed by the beautiful organ music, singing of Hymns (pre-recorded during corona virus), prayer and worship, scripture readings, the reading of a Psalm, the speaking of the Apostle’s, or Nicene Creed the Lord’s Prayer and celebration of the Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion).

Holy Communion

All those who wish to participate in Holy Communion need to indicate this on the questionnaire provided.

Dress Code

St John’s does not prescribe a specific dress code. People may dress formally, or respectfully casual, according to their preference. Consequently, the emphasis at our church is on attendance and the proclamation of God’s word.

Reservations

Current Covid-19 protocols prescribe that services are attended by no more than 50% of maximum capacity of the church building. This is of particular significance on special days in the church calendar, like Easter, Christmas, etc. It is, therefore, requested that those who wish to attend please contact the Pastor by WhatsApp or SMS at 0785752604.
